Taoiseach Unveils Necrology Wall at Glasnevin Cemetery

photo : Fennell Photography

An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny TD,  unveiled the initial phase of a Necrology Wall at Glasnevin Cemetery which will record all who died as a result of the 1916 conflict, in chronological and alphabetical order.  Ultimately, the wall will record, year on year, all who died in Ireland, as a result of conflict, during the period 1916 to 1923. The essence of the Necrology Wall is remembrance, based on historical fact,  in a non-judgemental, non-hierarchical manner, of each and every person who died as a result of the conflict. The ambition, in turn, is to stimulate further reflection, discussion and understanding  and in so doing contribute to the ongoing process of peace and reconciliation on this Island. The concept of the Necrology Wall is akin to the concept of Truth and Reconciliation Commissions, which are designed to reveal, understand, forgive and ultimately move on from the past and lead to a more unified future.
