The Office of Public Works (OPW) is delighted to announce the official opening of the '1916 Easter Rising in St. Stephen’s Green Exhibition' in St. Stephen’s Green.
The exhibition, which consists of twenty beautifully illustrated outdoor exhibition panels, tells the story of these significant events that helped change the course of Irish history. Significant figures in Irish history including Commandant Michael Mallin, Countess Markievicz, members of the Irish Citizen Army and Cumann na mBan took over St. Stephen’s Green on the 24th April 1916, for a number of days as part of the Rising in Dublin. Trenches were dug, barricades set-up, a field hospital established in the bandstand, prisoners secured in the potting sheds and thus the Green became a battlefield in the centre of Dublin. The exhibition runs from March 14th to December 31st 2016. At the exhibition launch was Alice Foynes (4), great great granddaughter of Irish Volunteer George Fullerton with Gareth McMahon (left) and Darren McMahon, The Great Irish War Society.
